Description

Cruises on the Zambezi River:

The Mighty Zambezi River just above the Victoria Falls, before the river gathers its forces to plunge down the granite edge, flows slowly and sedately past the resident hippopotamus and crocodiles.  Birds flying home to roost, circle overhead and elephants meander down to the river banks to drink and playfully gambol.  Various buck and giraffe shyly venture out to drink at the waters edge.

This wide lazy stretch of river has many islands and sandbanks which animals venture onto. The Zimbabwean side of the river is a protected area and part of the Zambezi National Park.  The Zambezi River is the 4th largest in Africa after the Nile, Zaire and Niger respectively. Its source is in North Western Zambia and flows approximately 2800km to its mouth in Mozambique into the warm Indian Ocean.

The sizes and facilities of cruise boats do vary from company to company. Relax and enjoy the riverine vegetation like the iconic the Mulala Palm.  This tall attractive palm tree that produces a vegetable ivory fruit that grows to the size of a cricket ball, and is a favoured food source for elephants and baboons. The birdlife is excellent while you cruise past hippo and occasionally crocodile. In the drier months, wildlife such as elephant and many antelope species can be seen grazing on the Riverbanks or swimming across to the smaller islands.

Several cruises are offered - breakfast, lunch and sunset cruises, the latter being the most popular and therefore the busiest time of the day.  An African sunset is a spectacular and glorious pyrotechnic display.  Cruise boats vary in size and style but generally, all offer comfortable seating in safari chairs, tables with attractive table cloths, bar service, snacks and have toilet facilities on board. Cruise boats have life jackets and rings and safety features are pointed out by the skipper. The cruises are shaded and gently make their way upstream towards the National Park, usually accompanied by a brief talk about the River and its wildlife by your skipper.
